Description
The view from the top of Calton Hill with the Dugald Stewart monument and the city of Edinburgh behind.
The monument is a memorial to Dugald Stewart, a Scottish philosopher and mathematician who was born and lived in Edinburgh from 1753 to 1828. He lectured at the University of Edinburgh and was a joint founder of the Royal Society of Edinburgh in 1783.
The Dugald Stewart Monument was designed by the Scottish architect William Henry Playfair and was completed in 1831. The design was modeled after the Tower of the Winds in Athens.
Some notable Edinburgh landmarks visible behind the monmument include Edinburgh Castle, St Giles Cathedral, The Scott Monument and the Balmoral Hotel with its prominent clock tower.
