Description
Black and white photograph of the Anchor public house at Bankside, London at night, with St Paul's Cathedral in the background. The Anchor is a historic London pub on the south bank of the River Thames, in the area known as Bankside. The famous London diarist, Samuel Pepys, apparently sat in the bar here watching and writing about the great fire of London in 1666. A tavern has existed on this site for over 800 years, but wasn't always known as the Anchor. During Shakespeare's time, Bankside was the heart of London's theatre land. The Globe Theatre is just a few hundred yards from here on the other side of Southwark Bridge. The Anchor was frequented by actors and theatre goers in those days and is the only surviving riverside inn from that time in Bankside.
