Portencross Pier in Scotland is a concrete pier built in the early 1900s as a stopping point for paddle steamers bringing day trippers from Glasgow and the River Clyde. Portencross is a small hamlet near West Kilbride on the North Ayrshire coast in Scotland. A small Castle sits about 100m south of Portencross Pier.
As Portencross Pier is quite exposed, it was unsuitable for the tourist paddle steamers in rougher sea conditions and proved less popular than some other nearby locations. The pier was also used to transport locally produced potatoes from Portencross to Glasgow.
Portencross Pier fell out of use for shipping some time ago, but seemed to be a popular fishing location when I visited.
Image Details:
This is a four minute long exposure photograph which has smoothed out the sea around Portencross Pier and blurred the clouds, creating quite a surreal, painterly image. The Isle of Arran can be seen in the distance behind the pier.
