Isola delle Femmine (Island of the Women) is a small town on the north coast of Sicily and is a part of the administrative district of Palermo. The town gets the name Isola delle Femmine from this tiny island a short distance from the port. There are various legends as to the origin of the name, including both a prison and a refuge for women having existed on the island in the past.
In the late 18th and early 19th centuries, many residents of Isola delle Femmine emigrated to California and settled in the coastal towns of Pittsburg, Monterey and Martinez. A sister-city connection now exists between these towns. A local artist, who is descended from those Sicilian immigrants, created a statue of a fisherman in PIttsburg Marina and a copy was later sent to Isola Delle Femmine where it stands in the harbour.
This photo is a long exposure of just over four minutes which has given quite a surreal feel to the water.
