Description
Porta Nuova (New Gate) is the western entrance into the old city of Palermo in Sicily. On the far side of the gate is Corso Calatafimi, the route to Monreale, which leads into Corso Vittorio Emanuele as it passes through Porta Nuova. This is the oldest street in Palermo and was originally called the Cassaro. First built in the 15th century, Porta Nuova was rebuilt to commemorate the visit of Emperrr Charles V in 1535. During its history, the gate has also been known as Porta dell'Aquilla (Gate of the Eagle), Porta Austriaca (Austrian Gate) and Porta Imperiale (Imperial Gate).
Palazzo dei Normanni, the royal palace of Palermo, is located to the left of this view of Porta Nuova.
